One of the genuine pleasures of being a documentary wedding photographer in London is having the privilege to witness and be part of so many people’s customs, traditions and cultures that otherwise might not be part of my life. I relish this mix and education.
It’s stating the obvious really, but I’m going to say it anyway. When I see people in an incredibly happy and emotional situation, full of pride for a loved one or somewhat subdued by the knowledge that they are finally able to commit to another in front of friends and family, it just demonstrates to me time and time again, that underneath colour, race, religion, clothes and tradition, we are all just the same. It’s obvious isn’t it? Not if you watch the media or read the newspapers. I think they portray a false picture of what we’re really all about and it’s easy to be misled by them.
The very diversity of the human race is, in fact, a means for creating a world based on unity rather than uniformity. It is not by the suppression of differences that we will arrive at unity, but rather by an increased awareness of and respect for the intrinsic value of each separate culture, and indeed, of each individual. It is not diversity in itself that is the cause of conflict, but rather our immature attitude towards it, our intolerance and misconceptions of others.
Weddings are a great jamboree for people, where families with different traditions and backgrounds come together. They become stronger, more understanding.
If we just actually see what we’re looking at, it doesn’t take us long to realize that love is all that really matters, not the package it arrives in.
Vive la différence.
